Actions with the Same Reward as Hajj and Umrah

Actions that are equal to Hajj and Umrah [in terms of rewards]

There are several righteous deeds that are equal in reward to Hajj and Umrah. Some of these deeds are:

1. Dhikr after the five daily prayers

A group of poverty-stricken people came to the Prophet(SAW) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy people will have higher grades and will have permanent enjoyment in high levels in Paradise. They pray like us and fast as we do, but they have more money by which they perform the Hajj, ‘Umrah, participate in the honorable battle and give in charity.” The Prophet(SAW) replied, “Shall I not tell you something upon which if you acted you would catch up with those who have surpassed you? Nobody would surpass you and you would be better than the people amongst whom you live except those who would do the same. Say ‘Subhan Allah’, ‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’ thirty-three times each after every (compulsory) prayer.’” Reported by Al-Bukhari.
This means that dhikr (words of remembrance) after each prayer equals Hajj and ‘Umrah for Muslims.

2. Praying the ‘Isha and Fajr prayers in congregation

In a similar report to the above, the Prophet answered with another response. He said, “Has Allah not rendered for you the ‘Isha prayer in congregation equal to Hajj, and the Fajr prayer in congregation equal to ‘Umrah?”

3. Praying the Fajr prayer in congregation and staying in the mosque until sunrise to perform the Duha prayer

The Prophet(SAW) said, “Whoever prays the Fajr in a congregation, then sits remembering Allah (dhikr) until the sun rises, then prays two units, he will receive the rewards of a complete Hajj and ‘Umrah – he repeated that thrice.” Reported by Al-Tirmidhi.
4. Attending the congregational prayers at the mosque, and walking to the mosque to perform voluntary prayers
The Prophet(SAW) said, “Whoever walks to complete an obligatory prayer in congregation, it is like Hajj [in terms of rewards], and whoever walks to complete a voluntary prayer, it is like a voluntary ‘Umrah [in terms of rewards].” Walking to the mosque to complete sunnah prayers such as the Duha prayer as mentioned in the version of Abu Dawud.
5. Offering prayers in Quba Mosque
The Prophet(SAW) said, “He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Masjid Quba and prays therein will have the reward like that of 'Umrah'”.
‘A’ishah bint Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas said, “I heard my father saying, ‘It is dearer to me to pray two units in Quba’ Mosque than visiting Masjid Al-Aqsa twice. If people only knew the virtues of praying in the Quba Mosque, they would fight over it.”

Some Aspects of Hajj and Umrah

Hajj and Umrah are the two obligations loved and cherished by the Allah Almighty the most. The performance of both the Holy journeys not only cleanses the soul of a person performing it but also brings a lot of happiness, wealth and satisfaction. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is recommended to be performed by a Muslim at least once in his life. Hazrat Muhammad SAWW said regarding the performance of Hajj that;

“Among you, the one whom a cruel ruler, an illness or a financial issue does not stop you to perform Hajj, either he will die as a Jewish or a Christian.”

The Hadith has a deep meaning that refers to the fact that either a Muslim who has the ability to perform Hajj does not perform it without a solid reason, it means nothing to the Almighty that he may die as a Jewish or a Christian.

Hajj is among the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory while the performance of Umrah is a Non- obligatory gesture and is purely a Sunnah. Muslims all across the world pay extra attention to their religion and keep it at first place in all matters f their lives. But the performance of Hajj and Umrah is a matter that is not practiced of seen on daily basis. That is the main reason that people should have known about the accurate and true method of performing both Hajj and Umrah. The performance of Umrah is highly appreciated by the Allah Almighty because of the fulfillment of His SWT beloved Prophet Muhammad SAWW. Also, the performance of Umrah in the Holy month of Ramadhan gives an abundant of rewards that at some places it is considered to be equivalent to Hajj in the mean of rewards and blessings.

Performance of Hajj and Umrah is the desire of every Muslim living on the planet Earth. A number of Muslims perform Hajj and Umrah every year from all across the World and loved to be honored by the Almighty being His SWT guests. But sometimes, the Muslims going to Madinah and Mecca for the performance of their Holy journey gets confused and muddled because of their unawareness about the eminent aspects of the performance of Hajj and Umrah. Here is some information on the important aspects of performing Hajj and Umrah so that the pilgrims do not make mistakes that they usually make while performing their Holy Trip.

The very first thing that pilgrims should keep in mind is that they must follow the way being described in the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet SAWW and do not try to perform anything on their own. The whole process of performance of both Hajj and Umrah are elaborately described in the books or guides of Sunnah from the very start till the very end. So, it is necessary to know well about and to learn all the acts of Hajj and Umrah before performing this sacred journey.

When a person makes Niyyah perform Hajj or Umrah, it means that he or she makes a genuine intention of the Hajj or Umrah. When he or she utters Talbiyah, the person assured Halaal which means that he or she has promised to the Almighty that he will give up all the allowed things. The meaning is that he allowed Halaal things become Haraam for him. The combination of the two (that is Niyyah and Talbiyah) is known as Ihram. Ihram is a two sheet white cloth that men used to wear when they make Niyyah perform the sacred journey. Whereas the women can either wear Hijab or can simply dressed up like they used to be. The only necessity is that they must cover their head and do not show their hair to any Non- mahram in any condition. If somebody wears Ihram and does not make known clearly his intention for Hajj and Umrah and utter Talbiyah, he does not perform Umrah. That is the reason why before Niyyah and Talbiyah, he can cover his head during two rakah of Nafl. Praying two Rakahs of Nafl is an act which is not permitted in the real state of Ihram.

After putting on Ihram and making a complete Niyyah to perform the Sacred journey, the next step is to perform Sai. The actual meaning of Sai is “to rumor to make try”. In the sense of Hajj and Umrah performance, Sai is a walk moving back and forth for seven times. The Sai is performed between the two famous hills of Safa and Marwah situated to the south and north of the Kabah Shareef in that order. Sai is basically a gesture as a memorial of Hazrat Bibi Hajra RA who was the mother of Prophet Ismael AS and wife of Prophet Ibrahim AS. She was the maid of the first wife of Prophet Ibrahim AS and married him after his first wife permits him to marry her because of her infertility so that they could have a child and the child born was Prophet Ismael AS. The performance of Sai has a remarkable historical background. The incident when Bibi Hajra and baby Ismael AS were all alone in the desert and Prophet Ismael AS was crying badly because of his thirst, then the true example of Mother’s unconditional love was depicted and remained unmatchable until now. The mother, for the sake of his child, runs here and there praying for some help from the Almighty. Suddenly then, a spring of water appeared miraculously and quenched the thirst of the baby Ismael AS. The gesture of Hazrat Bibi Hajra RA was so admired by the Allah Almighty that it then becomes an obligation to perform during Hajj and Umrah.

Then, the ritual of Sacrifice of animals is performed by the pilgrims with full enthusiasm and zest. It should be noted that the sacrificing of animals in the way of Allah Almighty is practiced in the memory of Hazrat Ibrahim AS, who had presented his one and only and the most beloved thing he had in accordance to the will of his Lord. Sacrificing animals is a ritual only performed in Hajj and not in Umrah. In Umrah after Sai, the shaving of the head is the last and next ritual.

Then comes the shaving of heads; the pilgrim men should shave or trim their head hair. It is not necessary to shave the whole head, trimming can also be done. But it will be of more Fazeelat to shave the whole head. While the women clip their hair up to 1inch.

Mahram Rules for Women performing Hajj and Umrah

Mahram Rules for Women performing Hajj and Umrah

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory on every capable Muslim to perform Hajj once in his or her lifetime. Capabilities mean that he must be able to afford Hajj both physically and financially.

”In it are clear signs, the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds. (Quran 3:97)

According to the above Quranic reference, Muslims who are able to find a way (means are able to afford the journey and accommodation in Makkah and all other related expenses and are able to physically endure the travel) must perform Hajj. Umrah, on the other hand can be performed any number of times during one’s lifetime and is optional. Men and women from all over the world wish to perform Hajj and Umrah once in their lifetime.

Islam is a religion based on mercy and compassion. The teachings of Islam protect the weak and the vulnerable. It has specific intention of protecting the honour of women, their dignity and reputation which is why The Prophet (SAWS) forbade women to travel alone and without someone to protect them. The true intention of this prohibition is safety and protection, women are allowed to travel in a safe company accompanied by elders and reputable Muslim men and women.

The first thing is that who is a Mahram. A Mahram is a male relative with whom she is permanently forbidden to marry because of blood ties, breastfeeding or ties through marriage. This includes several relations other than her husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, grandson, uncle, nephew, father-in-law, son-in-law, stepfather, stepson and any male with whom she has shared a mother’s milk are Mahram for a woman according to Islamic Shari’ah.

There are mixed opinions about women going to Hajj and Umrah with or without a Mahram. Some scholars are of the view that Hajj is not obligatory for a Muslim woman if she does not have a Mahram, even if she can afford the journey. Some scholars believe that women who do not possess Mahram and are able to afford the expenses, and then they should sponsor someone else to do Hajj in their place.

According to the current Saudi rules and regulations a women under the age of 45 years cannot go for Umrah unless she is accompanied with her Mahram. Complete details of the relationship between the two should be provided with the applications. If a woman is 45 years old or older then she can go without a Mahram only if she is travelling with an organized group or family and she submits a notarized No Objection Certificate from her Mahram. There are certain instances when it is not allowed for a women to even leave Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without a Mahram. The rue of thumb in this case is, how their visa is issued. If the visa is issued with a mahram’s name on it, then she can not leave Saudi without that Mahram. This can happen in instances where flights are scheduled differently or the lady in question and her Mahram are planning to leave for two separate destinations. So, please consult us before booking your flights and making your package arrangements before travelling. The minimum age for a mahram is 17 years to accompany any blood relative lady. If your Mahram is not in the country of your departure, you can book indirect flights to get together at a certain point before entering Saudi. Please remember again, that you need t leave together as well. The visa process in such cases is also complex. We ahve covered that in a separate post here.

There is also a prevailing unscrupulous arrangement some agents are engaged in and that is “arranging a mahram”. This includes stapling the lady with a family completely unknown to her. This can not only result in legal trouble, but also can ruin the very essence of the ibadah one is going for. So please avoid trying to dupe the regulations and stick to legal and shariah guidelines always. You can always call us on 0208 819 3505 for more information. Our agents will be happy to assist you with more information on the subject and discuss your specific requirements with you. We can also make special arrangements or recommendations if your Mahram is in a different country.
