Reflections on Surah Al-Kahf

saudigazette.com.sa

Reflections on Surah Al-Kahf

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah (Friday), a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the heaven, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.’”(Al-Hakim and Al-Bayhaqi)

Every Friday we make an effort to recite Surah Kahf. Yet, sadly, the majority of us are unaware of what we are reciting. Surah Al-Kahf contains one hundred and ten verses, with four main narratives. This surah is amazing as it brings together many lessons contained in narrations of nations past. It traverses the story of youths in the cave, the story of the two men and the garden, the story of Prophet Musa and the man of knowledge, Al-Khidr. Last but not least, the surah tells us the story of Dhul-Qarnain. Patience, gratitude, knowledge, and much more can all be learnt from this surah.

The first narrative being that of the young men, or the People of the Cave. These youth were tested by Allah in regards to their faith and belief in Allah and belief in Resurrection. They were given the choice to abandon their belief in Allah to save their lives or face persecution and death. Ultimately they chose their belief in Allah, for it is priceless, no pleasure can buy it, nor can money. This connects to the trial of the Dajjal or Anti-Christ who will appear as the major signs of the Day of Judgment occur. The first and biggest test he will come with, is the trial of iman; faith and belief in Allah. He will appear with many powers, and will even have a paradise and hellfire. Many will be deceived by him and will fall into disbelief; may Allah protect us from disbelief and the trial of the Dajjal.

The second story is that of the two men and the two gardens. One man, possessed wealth and a garden which yielded a large harvest, yet he disbelieved in Allah and in accountability on the Last Day, and he refused to give in charity. The second man was poorer, with less harvest, yet he knew his provision was secured with his Lord, and he believed in Allah. This is a trial of wealth.

Many of us experiences this trial today. How many today are granted wealth, yet deny the One who bestowed this favor upon them? It is a reminder to us that Allah blesses whomsoever He wills, and we should be grateful for the bounties we have. Success in the dunya, and in one’s wealth does not mean success on the Day of Judgment. This again refers back to the Dajjal. For the Dajjal will induce many with wealth, to the point that he will call out to the wealth of a valley and it will come out following him. Those who follow the Dajjal will be in abundance of wealth, and he will afflict those who shun him with severe poverty. Thus the believer should have his wealth in his hand, so that it is easy to release, not in his heart the believer does not become overly attached and obsessed with wealth. The believer’s faith and trust in Allah is rooted in his heart, so that it remains unaffected by the trial of wealth.

The third narrative is perhaps to many the most intriguing; it is the story of Prophet Musa and Al Khidr. Musa, was a great prophet of Allah, and was endowed with knowledge, yet Allah instructed him to seek out Al-Khidr, who also possessed a different type of knowledge. Knowledge should humble a person and not make them arrogant. Today, Muslims have neglected the Qur’an and the tradition of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Many people find it a burden, thinking that it is outdated and the knowledge it contains is ancient, and this is the trial of knowledge; will we truly hold on to the guidance of Allah? When the Dajjal appears he will distort what is left of the knowledge, and only the true believers will cling to the knowledge of this religion.

The fourth and final story in Surah Al-Kahf is that of Dhul-Qarnayn; a powerful king who ruled with justice. He is the very king that sealed off Gog and Magog, whose release is also a major portent of the final hour. The story of Dhul-Qarnayn, though not in detail, exemplifies one who is granted power and authority and uses this in the service of Allah. A minor sign of the hour is tyrannical and foolish leaders, who are astray and lead the people astray. Leadership is a responsibility, a duty, and trust from Allah. There are a lot of responsibilities attached to being a ruler. This trial, relates to the Dajjal for the Dajjal will give authority to those who favor him, and will deprive the true believers.

That is why reading this Surah protects the believer from being fooled and tricked by the Dajjal, and it shields us from his deception and power.

Moreover, it is the only Surah that is explicitly linked to the Dajjal, as mentioned in various sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is of vital importance, for we are living in the end of times; the hour is near. A prelude to the hour is the arrival of the Dajjal. This surah should play a major role for us in our preparative preventative measures, against the Anti-Christ. The Dajjal is one the greatest trials to come, and throughout Surah Al-Kahf we see a recurring theme of trials and tribulations linking it back to the coming of the Dajjal.

So, the next time you read Surah Al-Kahf, try to remember these points, reflect upon the tales of truth contained in it. Reflect on the morals of the stories, and make a sincere intention to implement it in your life.

The importance of the city of Jerusalem in Islam

The importance of the city of Jerusalem in Islam

Jerusalem is perhaps the only city in the world that is considered historically and spiritually significant to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. The city of Jerusalem is known in Arabic as Al-Quds or Baitul-Maqdis (“The Noble, Sacred Place”), and the importance of the city to Muslims comes as a surprise to some Christians and Jews.

CENTER OF

MONOTHEISM

It should be remembered that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all spring from a common source.

All are religions of monotheism—the belief that there is one God, and one God only. All three religions share a reverence for many of the same prophets responsible for first teaching the Oneness of God in the area around Jerusalem, including Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Jesus—peace be upon them all. The reverence these religions share for Jerusalem is evidence of this shared background.

FIRST QIBLAH

FOR MUSLIMS

For Muslims, Jerusalem was the first Qibla—the place toward which they turn in prayer. It was many years into the Islamic mission (16 months after the Hijrah), that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was instructed to change the Qibla from Jerusalem to Mecca (Quran 2:142-144). It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad said, “There are only three mosques to which you should embark on a journey: the sacred mosque (Mecca, Saudi Arabia), this mosque of mine (Madinah, Saudi Arabia), and the mosque of Al-Aqsa (Jerusalem).”

Thus, Jerusalem is one of the three holiest places on earth for Muslims.

Site of the Night Journey and Ascension

It is Jerusalem that Muhammad (peace be upon him) visited during his night journey and ascension (called Isra’ and Mi’raj). In one evening, legend tells us that the angel Gabriel miraculously took the Prophet from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to the Furthest Mosque (Al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem.

He was then taken up to the heavens to be shown the signs of God. After the Prophet met with previous prophets and led them in prayer, he was then taken back to Mecca. The whole experience (which many Muslim commentators take literally and most Muslims believe as a miracle) lasted a few hours. The event of Isra’ and Mi’raj is mentioned in the Quran, in the first verse of Chapter 17, entitled “The Children of Israel.”

Glory to Allah, Who did take His servant for a journey by night, from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless—in order that We might show him some of Our signs. For He is the One who hears and knows all things. (Quran 17:1)

This night journey further reinforced the link between Mecca and Jerusalem as holy cities and serves as an example of every Muslim’s deep devotion and spiritual connection with Jerusalem. Most Muslims harbor a deep hope that Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land will be restored to a land of peace where all religious believers can exist in harmony. — Courtesy of saudigazette

Biometrics registration a must for Umrah visa

Biometrics registration a must for Umrah visa

Saudi embassies abroad have started taking biometrics of Umrah visa applicants following a new measure that came into effect from the beginning of the new Hijra year.

The move comes after a decision by the Saudi government to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims coming to the Kingdom for Haj and Umrah.

The Saudi Embassy in Pakistan has instructed all its accredited pilgrim service offices to obtain biometrics of pilgrims before applying for visas.

Previously the measure was applied on pilgrims from a few countries.

The Saudi Embassy in Sweden said the Saudi government has signed contracts with specialized international companies to take biometrics of people applying for entry visas including pilgrims, Al-Hayat Arabic daily reported.

The contracted company will establish biometric centers in Sweden, which will replace the existing visa service centers, a senior official said.

“The early registration of biometrics will reduce waiting time at immigration counters at the Kingdom’s entry points. The new system will ensure better services to visa applicants,” the official said.

In another development, the Civil Status Affairs Department in the Kingdom has instructed Saudi students pursuing higher studies in foreign universities not to marry non-Saudi women without receiving permission from authorities.

“This is also essential to register the names of their children to receive civil IDs,” the Arabic daily said quoting an informed source.

The department also urged Saudi scholarship students to renew their civil IDs six months before their expiration dates. “They should also register the birth of children at Saudi foreign missions within 30 days after delivery of the baby. The registration cannot be used as a travel document but can be used to prove dependency of the child,” the source said.

The department also urged students not to surrender their Civil IDs as a guarantee.

How to get Wisdom through holy Quran

How to get Wisdom through holy Quran

Most of the Muslims wrongly believe that only by keeping and learning to read Holy Quran, they can fulfil their religious responsibilities and duties. The basic theme of The Holy Quran is embedded in recognizing and acting upon its Ayats (verses) in an appropriate manner. How can a person complete its faith by just believing in Islamic lessons and teachings, but using them in the wrong manner? It means that a person has not completely interpreted the meaning of wordings of Quran, e.g. those Muslims who are joining so called Islamic forces like Talibans etc. in the name of Jihad, and who actually kill innocents and acting as tyrants, that only shows that they do not have a complete knowledge of Islam.

Now, talking about Holy Quran, and its life changing Ayats (verses), common belief is that the a person who learns it by heart will enter Jannah (paradise) along with its parents, while the exact meaning of it this Hadith is that the Hafiz (learner) of Holy Quran should act upon its lessons. ALLAH Almighty has blessed Muslims with golden pearls in the form of Holy Quran’s verses, so that we could get enlightenment and guidance from them, and transform our lives according to Islamic teaching in the best way. Following are few of the many messages of the Holy Quran, through which we can seek wisdom and understanding.

Avoiding unclear matters

“A little knowledge is hazardous” is a famous expression that compels a person not to indulge in things and acts which it has insufficient understanding of, because sooner or later, the condition would turn dangerous for that person. Islam also forbids Muslims from such issues that are not clear to us. The Gracious ALLAH has warned us about this matter in the verse 17:36 of Holy Quran

“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.”

This is what we must keep in mind before discussing about matters in our Deen (religion), before totally understanding about them. On a general note, we ought to also avoid going towards unsure affairs like Gambling that is prohibited in Islam.

Reflecting on one’s existence

The non Muslims, especially, Atheists, who even deny the existence of ALLAH Almighty, they do not think about how we come in to this life. ALLAH clearly says in Holy Quran, verse 20:55

“From the earth, We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it, We will extract you another time.”

Science has also proved that body of human consists of many elements found in the earth soil, and as The Quran says that we are made from earth.

Praying for ALLAH’S consistent guidance

No matter how much abilities and knowledge one possesses, there comes a time when things begin to get tougher, and then it looks for someone’s help in this regard. Same applies to Muslim’s life, which believes in ALLAH, but often gets distracted by satanic thoughts. That is the reason why Holy Quran has repeatedly emphasized on looking for The ALLAH Almighty supervision to remain on the correct pathway.

I Am Going For 5 star Umrah (Muslim Pilgrimage) & It Is Under £560

I Am Going For Umrah

I Am Going For 5 star Umrah (Muslim Pilgrimage) & It Is Under £560

I am so excited it is crazy. I just received my visas for my Umrah trip. I will be performing the Muslim Pilgrimage and sharing with you. I can’t believe that I have the chance to visit this Holy place. It has always been on my mind since I became Muslim 6 years ago and I kind of though it won’t be possible. As you know I have written a book on actually how to perform Umrah under £560. This Umrah is exactly this; Umrah under £560!

I have spent approximately £560 per person for a 10 day Umrah including Makkah and Medina in hotels next to the Kabah too. I haven’t spent a crazy amount of points either because I am short on them too, so it is cash and travel tricks. Some people spend thousands of pounds to go because they just don’t know how to do it for much cheaper. InshaAllah (God willing) I will be actually sharing how I did it and how other Muslims can do this without spending a fortune and without using too many points.

In the forthcoming weeks I will share all the preparation with you guys and kind of put my own list for the benefit of others. I want this space to be open so I can encourage Muslims to perform Umrah and remove the fear of breaking the bank. And for the non-Muslims to help them demystify what actually happens in Mekkah. I know many non Muslims are curious and it will be an excellent opportunity to see the rituals and the a close up of the area around it. Basically I will cover all my thoughts and curiosity I had before I become Muslim.

Humanity and Islam

Humanity and Islam

Humanity and Islam

The Holy Quran expressly declares that the human race is one family. All of us are the children of Adam and Eve, whether our skin is white or black. At various places it says: “All human beings are a single nation” (2:213). “All human beings are naught but a single nation and yet they disagree” (10:19). “And verily this your nation (human beings) is a single nation” (21:92) and (23:52).

The differences in our physical features, colors, complexions, languages, dresses, customs and the ways of living arise due to different climates and geographical territories. Those who settled in hot tropical zones grew to be black, and those who settled in cold climates remained white in their complexion. The people living in hot climates are hot-headed and the people living in cold climate have cold temperament. The diet also affects the color and temperament. The Mongolians, the Semites, the Darvidians and the Saxons took pride in tribalism. The lust for property, power and pelf made one tribe the enemy of the other tribe and led to bloodshed and battles. Such savage and illiterate people fashioned idols with their hands and worshiped natural phenomenon such as the sun, fire, bodies of water and snakes and other elements and creatures which could harm them. They believed that they could obtain protection from such material objects, creatures and elements of nature the river, the snakes and other objects which could harm them. Hence out of fancy and fear they made their gods. But the prophets always guided them and instructed them to worship one God –

The prophets, the guides whom God sent to all people, instructed these people to worship the one God, Who is omniscient, omnipotent and all merciful. These individuals, who were ruled by fear and stuck in their beliefs, frequently tortured, teased and persecuted these divine reformers known as the prophets. God never left humankind without guidance through prophets.

Adam was the first man as well as the first prophet. He guided his wife and children. The Quran tells us, “every people had a prophet” (10:47) “And certainly we raised in every people a prophet” (16:36). And there is not a people but a Warner has gone among them” (35:24). “And we did not send any apostle but with the language of the people, so that he might explain to them” (14:4). The advent of the Holy prophet of Islam is described in the Quran: “Those who follow the Apostle, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Torah and in the Bible” (7:157). The Holy Bible also mentions about the advent of our prophet. It says: “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, a prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me, unto him shall ye hearken in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.” (The New Testament Acts 3:22-24)

Moses is prophesying about a prophet who will give them law as he gave them divine law. Prophet Mohammad endorsed the Law of Moses and presented to him in the Quran. Hence no one else save Prophet Mohammad is the prophesized one by Moses in the Torah. About Hazrat Abraham the Quran says: “And when his Lord tried Abraham with certain words, and he fulfilled them, He (God) said, ‘I will make thee an Imam (a guide) for mankind . . . and of my offspring?’ then the Lord said “my (covenant) shall not reach the unjust.” (2:124)

About the eminence and guidance of Abraham the Bible says: “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2-3). About Ishmael the Bible says: “And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; Behold I have blessed him and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; Twelve princes shall he beget and I will make him a great nation” (Genesis 18:20)

Ishmael, Moses and Jesus Christ announced twelve successors. The Holy Prophet Mohammad also declared “Twelve Imams: after him and they are from Hazrat Ali to Hazrat Imam Mehdi. When Abraham left his wife Hagar and Ishmael at Mecca it was a barren and waterless desert. Hagar searched from water from hillock to hillock. Ishmael was thirsty and near to death. Through a miracle, a spring gushed out known as the well of zam zam. It is mentioned in the Bible and in the Quran. Abraham and Ishmael raised the House of God known as Kaaba. While raising the walls of the Holy House, Abraham prayed to God to accept this humble and sincere service. He said: “And when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House (saying) our Lord! Accept from us; surely Thou art the knowing. Our Lord! And make us both submissive (Muslims) to Thee and (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to Thee, and show us ways of devotion and turn to us (Merciful), surely Thou art the oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful- Our Lord! And raise up them an Apostle from among them who shall recite to them Thy communications and purify them; surely thou art the mighty, the wise” (2:127-129)

God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son Ishmael. He told about his vision to his son saying: “O, Son! I see in vision that I slay thee.” (37:102) Ishmael, an obedient and dutiful son replied: “O, Father! Act as thou hast been bidden (by the Lord) and thou wilt, if God willeth, find me of the patient one” (37:102). When Abraham laid down his son Ishmael and tied his hands and legs lest the boy should struggle while being slain and blind folded himself with a piece of cloth, passed the knife across, cutting the throat. When he uncovered his eyes he found a lamb laid slain and Ishmael safe and sound standing nearby. Abraham got worried. He thought his sacrifice was not accepted by God. But God has substituted lamb for Ishmael. The Quran says: “O, Abraham! Of course thou hast faithfully fulfilled the dream, thou art of the truthful ones, but verily it is an open test, we have substituted it with a greater sacrifice. We have transferred it to later generations.” (37:105-108).

The Bible relates that it was Isaac who was offered as a sacrifice, whereas the Quran seems to relate that it was Ishmael who was offered as a sacrifice. Whichever son it was, the point is that Abraham was willing to do what God asked of him, even at supreme personal cost.

The Quran and other divine scriptures testify this verity that humanity is the core message of prophecy. Some non-believers maintain that religion is the apple of discord. But is it not the mind’s inability to understand and the selfish and greedy passions that cause the discord, not the Truth given by God through the prophets? The prophets rendered great sacrifices. John was beheaded with a saw. Jesus Christ was tortured and crucified. Muhammad was teased and attacked. Thy tyrants and tribal chiefs troubled him, but the prophets tolerated all trials, for God and humanity. Humanity is the message of all religions.

How to Perform 'Umrah'

How to Perform 'Umrah'

How to Perform 'Umrah'

In Arabic, the word ‘Umrah is derived from I‘timaar which means a visit. However, ‘Umrah in Islamic terminology, means paying a visit to Ka’bah, performing Tawaaf (circumambulation) around it, walking between Safaa and Marwah seven times. A performer of ‘Umrah puts off his Ihraam by having his hair shaved or cut. ‘Umrah can be performed along with Hajj and in other days as well.

‘Umrah can be performed during anytime in the year, there is no fixed time for ‘Umrah.

The Pillars of `Umrah are four:

a) Ihraam: which is assumed at the Meeqaat.

b) Tawaaf: around the House.

c) Sa'y: walking between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah, which consists of seven circuits.

d) Tahal-lul: which means coming out of the state of Ihraam; becoming lawful what was previously prohibited during Ihraam.

During ‘Umrah, pilgrims do not go to Minaa, ‘Arafaat and Muzdalifah or throw pebbles on the Jamrahs (stone pillars representing devils) or offer animal sacrifice. These rites are only performed during Hajj.

How to perform ‘Umrah:

1. When the one who wants to perform ‘Umrah arrives at the Meeqaat, it is recommended for him (both man and woman) to take a bath if convenient, including menstruating women and those experiencing postnatal bleeding. The man perfumes his head and beard but not his Ihraam garments. There is no harm in what remains of it after Ihraam. There is nothing wrong if it is not possible to take a bath at Meeqaat.

2. Men are to change into their clothing of Ihraam while the women only need to make their intention at that time in the clothing they are already wearing. There is no specific clothing designated for women, except that they are prohibited from wearing the Niqaab (face-veil) and gloves. Instead, they may cover their hands with the lower part of their khimaar (head covering), while using the upper part of their jilbaab (outer garment) or a separate piece of fabric to cover their faces by drawing it down, if there is need to do so.

As for men, they must assume their Ihraam at the Meeqaat by wearing two pieces of fabric called the Izaar and the Ridaa’. The Ridaa’ covers the top half of the body, while the Izaar covers the lower half. No other clothing is allowed to be worn in addition to these – no underwear, no pants, no shirt, no turban, no hat, etc. are to be worn.

Then the pilgrim makes the intention at the Meeqaat to begin the rites of ‘Umrah by entering the state of Ihraam. The intention must be made in the heart, while the statement made afterwards is: “Labayka ‘Umrah” or “Allahumma labbayka ‘Umrah”. This statement begins the rites of `Umrah. So the first pillar of `Umrah is the Ihraam. The intention is made in the heart, while the tongue recites the opening Talbiyyah. And if you wish, when uttering Talbiyyah, you may state a condition to Allah fearing that which may prevent you from completion of the ‘Umrah whether illness or fear - saying “in habasanee haabes fa mahillee haithu habastanee” (I come out of the state of Ihraam from the place You prevent me from continuing).

So if you do that and are then prevented or become ill - then you may come out of Ihraam. Then repeat the Talbiyyah: “labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak” (“In response to your call O Allah I perform ‘Umrah, here I am O Allah. In response to Your call. You have no partner. In response to Your call. All Praise and Blessings, and the Ownership of all that You created is Yours (alone). You have no partner”)

Upon arriving at the sacred mosque in Makkah (Al-Masjid Al-Haraam), you should enter with your right foot and say: "Bismillaah, Allahumma Salli 'Alaa Muhammad, Allahumma Ighfirli waftahli Abwaaba Rahmatik. (In the name of Allah! O Allah! Exalt the mention of your Messenger. O Allah! Forgive my sins, and open the gates of Your mercy for me)." You should enter in a manner expressing humility and gratitude to the blessings He, Almighty, conferred upon you.

3. Upon arriving at the Ka’bah, stop reciting the Talbiyyah, then approach the Black Stone, touch it with your right hand and kiss it. If this isn't possible, you should face the Black Stone and point to it. Don’t push and shove, causing harm and being harmed by other people. When touching the Stone, the following is said: “Bismil-laah, Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest) or "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest).

A pilgrim must walk, keeping the Ka’bah on his left. When you reach the Yamaani corner touch it with your right hand, if possible, but do not kiss it, and say: “Bismil-laahi wa Allahu Akbar”. If this is difficult for you, then go on performing tawaaf without touching it, pointing at it or even saying “Allahu Akbar” because this was not narrated from the Prophet on the other hand whenever you reach or are parallel to the black stone, touch it with your right hand, kiss it and say, “Bismillaah Allahu Akbar”, if it is not possible then it is enough to point at it and say, “Bismillaah, Allahu Akbar”.

During this Tawaaf it is preferred for a man to do two things:

a) Al-Idhtibaa' from the beginning of Tawaaf until the end, which is placing the middle of one's Redaa' under the right arm and the ends of it over the left shoulder. When you are finished performing Tawaaf, you may return your Reda' to its original state because the time for A-Idhtibaa' is only during Tawaaf.

b) Ar-Raml during the first three circuits only. Ar-Raml means speeding up one's pace with small steps.

Make supplication from your heart, for that which will benefit you. Recite whatever you wish, supplicate to Allah by asking for good, recite the Quran, anything you wish. There are no specific statements or supplications to be recited during the Tawaaf that are authentically established in the Sunnah. However it is recommended to say between the two corners during each circumbulance as it is reported from the Messenger of Allah : “...Our Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire.” [Quran: 2:201]

4. When you complete seven circuits of Tawaaf, approach Maqaam Ibraaheem (Ibraaheem’s station) and recite this verse (which means): “And take you (people) the Maqaam (place) of Ibraheem as a place of Prayer...” [Quran: 2:125]

Then pray two short Rak’ahs, as close as conveniently possible, behind Maqaam Ibraheem. If it is not possible then you can pray them anywhere in the sacred mosque. It is preferred to recite during the first Rak'ah the chapter "Al-Kafiroon" [109] and during the second one the chapter of “Al-lkhlaas” [112].

Upon completing the two Rak'ahs, return to the Black Stone and touch it, if convenient

5. The next stage is to go to Safaa. Upon approaching the foot of Safaa, the following verse is recited (which means): “Verily, As-Safaa and Al-Marwah are from the symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or 'Umrah of the house (ka 'bah) to perform the going (tawaaf) between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allah is the All-Recognizer, All-Knower.” [Quran; 2:158]

6. Then climb unto mount Safaa until the Ka'bah is visible, if possible. Facing the Ka’bah the following is to be said 3 times, and between each time one is to make ones own supplication:

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Laa ilaaha il-lall-llaahu wadahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa 'alaa qulli shay'in qadeer. Laa ilaaha il-lall-llaahu wahdahu, anjaza wa'dahu, wa nasara 'abdahu, wa hazamal ahzaaba wahdahu" (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over everything. He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.)

7. Then descend and go towards Marwah, running between the fluorescent green lights (for men only), upon reaching Marwah climb upon it if it is possible, and repeat the same procedure as when ascending Safaa except you are not to recite the above-mentioned verse, because it is recited when ascending Safaa for the first time only. This completes one circuit. Then one continues back to Safaa running between the fluorescent green lights (for men only) - thus completing two circuits.

There are no particular supplications to be recited between Safaa and Marwah. Seven circuits are to be completed ending the last one on Marwah.

Then one is to have his hair cut although shaving it is better. Women should shorten their hair by a finger-tips length from the end. The rights of 'Umrah have now been completed.

Over 2m flock to Mina as Hajj begins

Over 2m flock to Mina as Hajj begins

MINA: More than 2 million Muslims from around the world arrived in Mina to spend the day of Tarwiyah and follow the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Pilgrims will then head to Mount Arafat on Thursday.

Thousands of security men accompanied the flows of pilgrims along Mina’s wide roads, bridges and tunnels. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) mission at the holy sites monitored the pilgrims heading from Makkah to Mina. Their journey went smoothly despite the huge number of vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic patrols were assisted by security forces in their efforts to organize the traffic, guide pilgrims and maintain security.

The Ministry of Health is offering medical and health care services to pilgrims during this year’s Hajj season by providing thousands of doctors, nurses and specialists appointed to serve pilgrims. These members work at hospitals near the holy sites and Makkah. The ministry assists the relevant authorities in carrying out the general emergency plan and dealing with emergencies that might arise during the pilgrims’ stop in Mina and Jamaarat bridge.

Along with the ministry, medical service departments of the National Guard Ministry, and the Defense Ministry and its hospitals appointed hundreds of their members to offer medical and treatment services to pilgrims at the holy sites.

The Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) is providing its services through thousands of members appointed to serve Hajjis. The organization designated a fleet of 100 ambulances spread throughout the holy sites.

Haj: A sight to behold

Haj: A sight to behold

Haj: A sight to behold

Haj is on (the day after tomorrow) and there is no more beautiful sight than the sight of the hundreds of thousands of Muslims coming from all entry points, dressed in white and with one mission, to perform their once in a lifetime duty in peace and security. We as, the government of Saudi Arabia and its people, take full pride in welcoming the guests of Allah and embrace them with open arms.

Saudi Arabia has mobilized all its resources, like it does every year, to ensure that pilgrims will perform their pilgrimage in peace and comfort. All sectors — government departments, passport, security, Haj, health and many other ancillary divisions — are on full alert. And they are ready to work in concerted unison to implement the Haj plan that usually is in the making as soon as the last Haj ends. The seamless cooperation is evident in the growing numbers of Muslims lauding the plan and thanking the Kingdom for the great effort in making their once in a lifetime journey comfortable.

The government, at the same time, while extending the hand of hospitality, too displays its iron fist. The government has also made it clear to all that an iron fist is strong and ready to crush anything that targets the safety of pilgrims and to ensure a smooth and comfortable Haj for the guests of Allah.

The sight of pilgrims eagerly arriving to the two holy cities is really touching and endearing. It really warms the cockles of the heart to see many pictures of pilgrims in tears of joy and happiness on their faces on landing in the holy land. Some of them have been waiting for many years in queue in their countries to be able to perform Haj. Some have labored and saved all their money over the years and some have sold all their valuables to be able to cover the expenses to perform Haj.

It is said in the Holy Qur’an, “And Haj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Kabaa) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence)”. Although it is not obligatory for Muslims, who are not able financially, to perform Haj but in order to do so, many people will go to extreme measures to ensure that they are able to do it, even if they were financially unable.

This brings me back to my main point I hope to highlight — poor people performing Haj. I wish that businessmen in all Muslim countries come up with a way to fulfill the wishes of making the impossible dream of poor pilgrims performing Haj come true by covering the costs of pilgrims. To be fair and from what I know, there are businessmen in Saudi Arabia who donate money secretly and without revealing their identity to cover the costs of many poor pilgrims.

I am sure that some similar good Samaritans exist in other Muslim countries, but this form of giving should be intensified to cover as many number as possible of the financially underprivileged. The biggest reward they get is in this lifetime itself when they see the bloom of pure happiness on the faces of those who get to do the once in lifetime journey to the two Holy Mosques and the Holy Sites.

In a previous article, I had written, “I call on the authorities to come up with a way to make Haj affordable for middle- and low-income people. It is a fact that Haj campaigns are overpriced for many, especially people with large number of family members. Given how life is expensive in some countries in Europe and even in America, or how low salaries are in some Muslim and poor countries, many of them find it almost impossible to fulfill the lifetime duty of Haj because of financial reasons.

“What if the authorities and some philanthropists came together to sponsor those who are facing difficulties in saving up for Haj? This could go a long way in embellishing the Kingdom’s image as a humane nation. Haj package providers should know that it is an honor to serve pilgrims and they should have a package that charges for the basic cost and not such that it earns an enormous profit for them.”

It is also good to see that the level of awareness of the domestic pilgrims is increasing and that the number of pilgrims without permits is on the decline. In the past, pilgrims without permits squatted around the Holy Sites and in main roads creating all sorts of problems. The level of organization by the security authorities and other government departments working in Haj is improving and tackling these issues.

With the sustained and planned expansion program at the Two Holy Mosques, the Kingdom is already alleviating the pressures of the numbers. This year it has increased the number of pilgrims for all countries and with future expansion Saudi Arabia will be ready to welcome more pilgrims. With all the systems and people in place, I am confident of a successful Haj this year and pray to God for a safe and peaceful Haj for all pilgrims.

Blurb: I wish that businessmen in all Muslim countries come up with a way to fulfill the wishes of making the impossible dream of poor pilgrims performing Haj come true by covering the costs of pilgrims.
